Clinical Placement Program (StudentMax)
Mission
In Fall 2003, representatives from hospitals and schools of nursing in the Portland-Vancouver area met to discuss developing a centralized clinical placement system, and agreed on a common mission: to improve the efficacy and capacity of nursing education through innovative, collaborative, centralized coordination of regional student clinical placements.
Advantages
Representatives agreed on the advantages of a centralized clinical placement system. Everyone has access (read and print) to database information for all clinical placements for all education partners and clinical partners. New opportunities can be quickly utilized. There is a significant reduction in %FTE necessary to negotiate and secure clinical placements for both education partners and clinical partners. Faculty and student clinical requirements can be standardized to avoid repetition and increase efficiency. Membership meetings provide a forum for discussion of issues facing nursing education and workforce development.
Accomplishments
The Workgroup established a database of current nursing student clinical placements in hospital settings as a basis for investigating maximum capacity for acute inpatient student experiences. With a generous grant from the SW Washington Workforce Development Council, the group created a public web site to house the clinical placements database, to submit or request an opportunity, to post shared documents, and to link to education and clinical partners’ web pages. This software package StudentMAX is now being marketed nationwide to ten other centers for nursing nationwide including Florida, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Washington. Revenue from the annual licensing fees will be used to fund expansion of the project to other regions in the state and to include students in allied health programs utilizing hospitals and community based settings for clinical placements, as funding allows. Membership has expanded to include 100% of hospitals and schools of nursing between Longview and Salem, and community partners (home health, hospice, county health departments, clinics, long-term care) are beginning to participate.
Expansion Goals
The Workgroup will investigate capacity issues to determine hospital units where capacity for student nurses can be increased, add these opportunities to the database as “open” line items, and announce these opportunities to the member schools. Members will seek to match course outcomes with hospital-based experiences, and investigate non-hospital opportunities that could provide experiences to meet course outcomes.

Nursing Programs/Schools
Today, Oregon has 23 schools that offer a nursing education to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Four are part of the Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing (Portland, Klamath Falls, Ashland, and La Grande campuses), five are private colleges (Concordia University, George Fox University, Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing, University of Portland School of Nursing, and Walla Walla College of Nursing), and 15 are in community colleges throughout the state. The community college programs offer an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) and takes 2-3 years to complete. The university-based programs offer a Bachelor's in Nursing (BSN), which takes four years to complete. Also, many of the community college programs offer a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) option, which prepares a more technical nurse.
Associate's Degree in Nursing Programs
Oregon has 14 associate degree programs for Registered Nurses. Twelve of the 14 programs have a Practical Nurse (PN) curriculum during the first year, which allows students to take the NCLEX-PN upon completion.
A minimum of two academic years is required to complete the program and meet the community college requirements for an ADN.
